The Missing Word in PE Portfolio Intelligence
Everyone promises “actionable intelligence.” What’s missing is action, taken together across the whole PE ecosystem.
Every Premier League club has a match analyst. By kickoff, the manager knows exactly where the opposition is weak. That analysis is actionable, but it doesn’t win the match. The players do, reading the game and adjusting together on the pitch, long before the next team talk or substitution.
Most portfolio intelligence is match analysis delivered only to the GP. But value creation is a team sport which is won over many games, by players from multiple organizations and across functions executing strategy and taking action.
You set the thesis. PortCo management runs the business. Operating partners work the value creation plan alongside them. Advisors support execution and transformation. Your co-investors have capital and conviction on the line. Each holds part of the picture, and each has a part to play in acting on it.
Portfolio Intelligence: The actionability test
Portfolio intelligence in private equity has to work at two altitudes. The view across the whole portfolio: which companies are on plan, and which are drifting at each stage of the hold, where patterns repeat, and where operating resources will do the most good. But intelligence and action must also happen one company at a time, each PortCo against its own plan. And the portfolio view is only as good as the intelligence and action in flight at the company level beneath it.
Intelligence only one organization can see can’t drive the action four organizations have to take.
It must reach someone who can act, with the right context, on the right cadence. Diagnose where the plan is off, act on it, measure whether the leading indicators move, and go again. Run that loop per PortCo, and every stakeholder with a hand in the outcome must be able to see, contribute, and act when they need to.
– The Lead Sponsor
Whether your deal team and operating team are separate groups or the same few partners, you own the thesis and the value creation plan. What you need isn’t a better rear-view report, it’s early warning: which initiatives are slipping, which leading indicators are moving, and where to put your operating resources this week rather than next quarter. And it needs to carry from your deal thesis through to your operating plan without getting lost in the handoff.
– PortCo Management
Too often, portfolio intelligence treats the PortCo as a data supplier and the lead sponsor as the audience. But it’s the PortCo management teams that run each business, so this is where most of the plan gets executed. When intelligence comes back to them, not just up from them, they can see their own performance against the plan, spot problems before the board pack, and adjust in the moment. Reporting stops being a compliance exercise and becomes a management and strategy execution tool.
– Co-investors
Your co-investors have capital and conviction on the line, but they typically see the business on a lag, through whatever you package for them. Shared, permissioned visibility lets them bring their own expertise and support to bear while it can still make a difference, not after the quarter closes.
– Advisors and Consultants
Your advisors are often embedded in the most critical workstreams, like pricing, procurement, or the carve-out. Too often their work lives in their own decks, systems and spreadsheets. Connected to the same plan, their work ties directly to the outcomes it’s meant to move, and everyone can see what’s working and why, when they need to.
Don’t separate action and intelligence
Receiving actionable intelligence is the start. You also have to act on it, and govern that action. That can only happen when the signal, owners, plan, and tracking live in one connected place, so what gets decided actually gets done and the impact is visible and tracked. That’s the scoreboard: everyone can see whether it worked.
When every organization in the ecosystem gets value from the intelligence, every organization contributes to it, and that’s also when the context gets richer. Better inputs make better intelligence for everyone involved.
That’s why we built Maestro as the system of record, action, and intelligence for the whole ecosystem. One shared picture of how value gets created, every organization and stakeholder acting on it in their own context. Portfolio intelligence built for the GP alone tells you what happened and what could happen. Intelligence built for the ecosystem changes what happens next.
